ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Flagler College swept a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader from No. 10 (
Collegiate Baseball Division II Top 30) USC Aiken, 9-1 and 9-3, Friday afternoon at Flagler Stadium.
Flagler improved to 20-14 overall and 8-6 in the Peach Belt. USC Aiken fell to 23-12 overall and 11-6 in conference play.
In the opener, Flagler starter
Johnny Gaines (Jacksonville, Fla./Hillsborough CC) (6-3) tossed a complete game seven-hitter and allowed an unearned run. Late in the game he retired 11-of-13-batters.
The Saints used a three-run fifth inning to widen the gap to 4-0.
Jose Rohena (Tampa, Fla./St. Petersburg College) and
Zach Bove (Winter Haven, Fla./Central Florida CC) hit back-to-back RBI singles and the third run came off a wild pitch.
Flagler sent 10 men to the plate in the eighth inning which yielded four more runs. Pinch hitter
Nate Fudala (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin HS) hit a two-run single in the frame.
Bove went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI while
Ollie Bertrand (Sainte-Adèle, Quebec/Monroe CC) singled, doubled and scored twice.
Will Percy (Colorado Springs, Colo./St. Mary's HS) and
John Sgromolo (Fleming Island, Fla./Clay HS) each singled twice for the Saints.
Steven Owens (5-2) took the loss after hurling seven-plus innings. He allowed 12 hits and seven earned runs, but did strike out five.
Stephen Carmon, Bill Rice and Nick Aranas each singled twice for the Pacers.

In the second game, Flagler got another great performance on the hill as
Tim Lappin (Jacksonville, Fla./Paxon HS) (2-2) went seven innings, scattered eight hits and allowed one earned run.
Ahead 3-2 in the fifth,
Dagmar Pena (Jacksonville, Fla./U. of Tampa) hit an infield single which scored a run and Fudala singled in another run which proved to be the game-winning hit.
The Saints added more cushion in the eighth when Pena belted a bases clearing triple to deep center. He finished the game 4-for-5 with four runs batted in.
Percy added a pair of singles.
Thomas McLeod (3-4) tossed six and two-thirds innings and surrendered nine hits, five earned runs and six walks. He also threw a wild pitch and hit a batter.
Camron, J.J. Loker and Josh Miller each singled twice for USCA.
