Flagler sweeps doubleheader against Armstrong Atlantic

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Flagler College held off Armstrong Atlantic State University in the first game 6-3 and then completed the sweep by rallying for a 4-2 win in the second game to sweep a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Flagler Stadium.

With the sweep today, Flagler (26-20 overall, 14-10 Peach Belt) wrapped up its division record at 9-6 and tied USC Aiken for third place. Flagler will be the No. 3 East seed in the upcoming Peach Belt Tournament as the Saints own the tiebreaker over the Pacers with a 2-1 record head-to-head. Flagler will be matched up against the No. 2 seed in the West, which is North Georgia College & State University, who visits Flagler next weekend to close out the regular season. Armstrong Atlantic falls to 25-21 overall and 6-15 in league play.

In the opener, Flagler jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Armstrong Atlantic rallied for a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth, but the Saints answered with two runs in the bottom of the eighth for insurance. The Pirates had the tying run at the plate in the top of the ninth, but could not push across another run.

Dagmar Pena's (Jacksonville, Fla./U. of Tampa) belted a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to give the Saints a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Nate Fudala (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin HS) hit a bases loaded single which deflected off Jonathan Fulghum's glove into the hole between first and second to score one run and Cade Smith (Ocala, Fla./North Marion HS) worked a five-pitch bases loaded walk to plate the sixth run of the game.

Will Percy (Colorado Springs, Colo./St. Mary's HS) collected three singles and scored twice. Pena went 2-for-4 with his sixth home run of the season and had two runs batted in. Smith went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Jonathan Armold (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Pine Crest School) (6-1) tossed seven innings, scattered seven hits, allowed one run and fanned three. He retired 11 batters on ground outs. Armold retired 12-of-the-first-16 batters he faced. Zach Gray (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Bryan College) closed the final inning and two-thirds to earn his first save of the year. He allowed just one hit and struck out two.

Josh Wilson singled twice and his first hit in the game, in the second inning, broke the Peach Belt Conference's all-time hit record which was 304 and was held by Jason Morales (2005-08) of UNC Pembroke. Alex Wyche and Cameron Scott each singled twice for the Pirates.

Bryan Roby (2-4) took the loss and went seven-plus innings and surrendered nine hits and five earned runs, but tallied five strike outs.

AASU's Josh Wilson became the Peach Belt Conference's all-time hits leader after his single in the second inning. He broke Jason Morales' (UNCP) record of 304 career hits set from 2005-08.

In the second game, Flagler scored all of its runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and held on for a 4-2 victory.

The Pirates had a chance to add to its 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth with the bases loaded and one out, but Wilson flied out to right field and Charlie Stewart (Port St. Luce, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy) threw home to get Chris Zittrouer trying to tag up and score from third.

Percy led off the eighth with a single to right field and took second when John Sgromolo (Fleming Island, Fla./Clay HS) drew a one-out walk. Pena tied the game 1-all when he singled in Percy which chased AASU starter Chris Base. Ollie Bertrand (Sainte-Adèle, Quebec/Monroe College) welcomed Pirate reliever Brandon McCreery with a two-run double and the Saints took a 3-1 lead.

The Pirates threatened in the ninth as Wyche singled home a run to cut the deficit to 4-2. With the bases loaded, Tyler McKendree (Jacksonville, Fla./Bartram Trail HS) got Auston Thomas to hit a flare to left field where Tyler Vanover (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Providence HS) made a diving catch and Zittrouer grounded out to third base to end the game.

Cale Owen (Clearwater, Fla./home school) and Stewart each singled twice for the Saints.

Johnny Gaines (Jacksonville, Fla./Hillsborough CC) (7-5) tossed eight innings and scattered six hits, allowed one run, walked six and fanned four. McKendree got the final two outs of the game to earn his sixth save of the year.

Michael Price singled and tripled for the Pirates while Zittrouer singled twice.

Chris Base (1-6) tossed seven and one-third innings and surrendered seven hits and three runs. He retired 14-of-the-first-16 batters he faced including 12 in a row.

Flagler will travel to Daytona Beach and face ninth-ranked (NAIA) Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Apr. 28 at 7 p.m.
