GREENWOOD, S.C. −
Dagmar Pena (Jacksonville, Fla./U. of Tampa) belted a one-out solo home run in the top of the 10th inning to help lead Flagler College to a 4-3 win over Lander University in a Peach Belt Conference East Division baseball game Sunday afternoon at Legion Field.
Flagler improved to 23-20 overall and 11-10 in the Peach Belt. The Saints also raised their division record to 6-6 and needs one more win to clinch the final playoff spot in the conference tournament. Lander fell to 23-19 overall and 6-15 in league play. The loss also eliminated the Bearcats from postseason consideration as they end with a 4-11 division record.
Pena greeted Lander reliever Ben Runyon (2-3) with the home run. Runyon came in to face Pena and then gave up a double to
Payne Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) before retiring the last two hitters.
Jonathan Armold (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Pine Crest School) (5-1) finished off the complete game and just got out of the last inning. He retired the first two batters, but Pete Hernandez singled to center field. Hunter Dowis pinch ran for Hernandez and Bud Lanier followed with a single to left. On Lanier's hit, Flagler left fielder
Jose Rohena (Tampa, Fla./St. Petersburg College) misplayed the ball which allowed Dowis to reach third and round the bag to tie the score. Rohena gathered the ball and threw it to cut-off man
Cale Owen (Clearwater, Fla./home school) who threw to Maddox at the plate. The throw went up the third base line, but Maddox caught the ball as Dowis ran into him, trying to score, to end the game.
Armold tossed all 10 innings, scattered 10 hits and struck out eight batters.
John Sgromolo (Fleming Island, Fla./Clay HS) and Maddox each had RBI singles in the fourth to give the Saints a 2-1 lead.
Jordan Owens had an RBI double and Lanier added an RBI single in the fifth as the Bearcats took a 3-2 lead.
Maddox grounded out to score the game-tying run in the eighth.
Pena went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and drove in one for the Saints. Maddox singled, doubled and drove in two while
Will Percy (Colorado Springs, Colo./St. Mary's HS),
Zach Bove (Winter Haven, Fla./Central Florida CC) and Sgromolo each singled twice.
Lanier and Brooks Reames each singled twice for Lander. Runyon tossed the last two-thirds of the 10th inning and gave up two hits and a run and was credited with the loss.
Flagler returns home for a three-game set against Armstrong Atlantic State University after having the next four days off for final exams. The two teams meet on Friday (Apr. 23) at 6 p.m. at Flagler Stadium.
