ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Flagler College pitcher
John Goryl (Apopka, Fla./Daytona Beach CC/Apopka HS) has signed a free agent contract with the Cleveland Indians.
"I am excited to have this opportunity," said Goryl. "Playing professional baseball is something I have always dreamed would happen."
Goryl, a 6-foot right-hander, will report to Goodyear, Ariz., and its extended spring training camp on Friday. From there, Goryl will be assigned to either its Rookie League team in Goodyear or its Short-Season Class A (Mahoning Valley) team in Niles, Ohio.
Goryl made 13 appearances for the Saints last spring, and made 10 starts on the mound. He finished with a 5.26 earned run average and logged 53 innings. For his three-year career, Goryl posted an 8-10 record with a 5.22 ERA. He made 39 appearances with 25 starts and two complete games. Goryl struck out 102 batters in 151 2/3 innings pitched and only walked 52 batters.
He is the son of John and Diane Goryl. His father, John, played six seasons (1957-64) in the Majors for the Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Twins. He also managed the Twins in 1980 and 1981.
