ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Armstrong Atlantic State University scored five runs in the third and eighth innings en route to a 14-5 win over Flagler College in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday night at Flagler Stadium. AASU improved its record to 29-16 while Flagler fell to 15-28.
The Pirates struck early with three runs in the top of the first, aided by a two-run double by Drew Walker.
The Saints answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. A base loaded walk, an infield run scoring single by
Payne Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep), an RBI single by
Charlie Stewart (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy) and a sacrifice fly put Flagler ahead 4-3.
But, a bases clearing triple by John Roberts (3-5, 3B, R, 3RBI) gave AASU the lead for good in the top of the third.
Walker (3-5, 2B, 3B, 2R, 5RBI) added a bases clearing triple in the top of the eighth for the Pirates.
Blake Culberson (4-2) pitched two innings in relief and allowed one hit and one run to pick up the victory.
John Wilson went 3-for-6 with a home run, three runs scored and collected one RBI. Alex Wyche went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and another driven in.
#J.W. Deighton# (New Port Richey, Fla./Central Florida CC) (3-3) took the loss for the Saints after pitching one inning in relief. He allowed three hits and four earned runs.
Maddox singled, doubled and drove in a run. Stewart singled, doubled, scored a run and drove in another.
John Sgromolo (Green Cove Springs, Fla./Clay HS) and
Zach Bove (Winter Haven, Fla./Central Florida CC) each singled twice for the Saints. Both scored a run and Bove added an RBI.
Flagler travels to Saint Leo to start a three-game weekend series. The series starts on Friday (Apr. 17) at 7 p.m.
