ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Chris Leon's two-run double in the eighth inning provided the necessary insurance runs as Barry University defeated Flagler College 5-3 in a non-conference baseball game Friday night at Flagler Stadium. Barry improved to 7-1 on the season while Flagler fell to 3-7.
The Buccaneers led 3-1 going into the top of the eighth and Mitch Rodriguez got the inning started with a one-out single. Yas Gutierrez and Yudelmis Hernandez drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Leon followed with his double to push the Barry lead to 5-1.
Flagler answered in the home half of the ninth when
Kyle Foti (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic HS) belted a solo home run, his third of the season, to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Jordan McClure (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff HS) drew a walk and pinch hitter
Will Percy (Colorado Springs, Colo./St. Mary's HS) singled with one out which chased reliever Robbie Conver. Brian Milanes came on in relief, but gave up a two-out RBI single to pinch hitter
John Sgromolo (Fleming Island, Fla./Clay HS). After a walk loaded the bases Milanes fanned
Joey Kampfer (Jacksonville, Fla./Edward White HS) to end the game.
Hernandez went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Bucs with a double. Leon went 1-for-3 with the double and drove in three runs.
Bobby Hernandez (1-1) tossed seven innings and only allowed one hit, one run and struck out four. Milanes picked up his second save of the season and allowed one hit.
Jarrod Simmons (Jacksonville, Fla./Central Florida CC) doubled for the Saints.
Austin Donmoyer (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area HS) (1-2) tossed eight innings, scattered 10 hits and allowed five runs in picking up the loss.
Flagler and Barry meet in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Flagler Stadium.
