AMERICUS, Ga. − Joseph Toby (Jacksonville, Fla./Wolfson HS) broke a scoreless tie with an unassisted goal in the 53rd minute to help lift Flagler College past Georgia Southwestern State University 2-0 in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match Wednesday afternoon at Hurricane Field.
The win puts Flagler back into first place with a 6-1 conference record and an 11-5-1 overall record. Flagler has a two point lead over Clayton State and Lander who play each other on Oct. 31 at 1 p.m. Flagler hosts Francis Marion University on Saturday at 7 p.m. Flagler wins the regular season title if it beats Francis Marion or ties FMU and Clayton State defeats Lander (Flagler owns the tiebreaker) or if Clayton State and Lander play to a draw.
Georgia Southwestern falls to 2-15-0 overall and conclude the conference slate at 0-8.
Toby gathered in a loose ball in front of the goal and booted it in from 12 yards out to give the Saints the lead. Adam Jackson (Nottingham, England/Bilborough College) added an insurance goal, his first collegiate goal, in the 70th minute. Conor Killeen (Dublin, Ireland/Colaiste Ide) found Jackson by the left post for the goal.
Matt Gilman (Ocala, Fla./Jacksonville U.) recorded one save to record his fifth shutout of the season. David Porley tallied four saves for the Hurricanes.
Flagler out-shot Georgia Southwestern 16-4 and held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
