ST. AUGUSTIN E, Fla. − Matt Klancic's header off Adrian Guzman's corner kick was all Saint Xavier University needed in a 1-0 win over Flagler College in a non-conference men's soccer match Saturday night at Saints Field.
The Cougars won their third match in a row, and second on their two-match Florida swing, to improve to 9-3-1. Flagler falls to 8-5-1 on the season.
Saint Xavier played the last 10:27 two men down after one player was issued a red card and the other was issued their second yellow card of the match. Al Palar was the last Cougar to be sent off after being carded twice within 16 seconds. Seamus Ryan was issued a red card in the 80th minute. However, the Cougars were able to weather eight Saint shots, one of which was saved by Ian Pickett who tallied 10 saves on the night.
Flagler out-shot Saint Xavier 29-20, but all 10 on goal were stopped. The Cougars held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks and also committed 18 fouls while the Saints were whistled for 13. Saint Xavier was given nine cards while Flagler pocketed three.
After a scoreless first half, Saint Xavier nearly took the lead when Palar ripped a shot to the right half of the goal, but Flagler's
Aaron Beers (Rockledge, Fla./Edgewood HS) made a diving save, punching the ball out of bounds. Beers tallied four saves for the Saints.
Joseph Toby (Jacksonville, Fla./Wolfson HS) took seven shots, two of which were on goal for the Saints.
Flagler returns to action on Oct. 21 when it hosts Florida Southern College in a regional match-up at 7 p.m. at Saints Field.
