ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle University (37-10, 10-5 Florida Sun) Eagles swept a doubleheader winning 9-1 in the opener and 4-2 in a 13-inning marathon to sweep the three-game series over the Flagler College (27-19, 7-8) Saints and extend their season-long win streak to 17 games. The two wins also extend the Eagles win streak to 16 games in the series between the two rivals.

In the opener, Embry-Riddle used a four-run fourth inning to jump ahead 5-0 and roll to a 9-1 win.

Josh Smith led off the inning with a base hit to left-center and two infield singles followed to load the bases. Bernie Hurley was hit by a pitch from Flagler starter Brad Jackson (Havana, Fla./North Florida CC) to force in the eventual game winning run. An RBI single by Kevin Ferreiro and a sacrifice fly by Michael Brady accounted for two more runs in the frame.

Flagler scored its only run in the bottom of the fourth on Kris King's (Youngstown, Ohio/Santa Fe CC) solo home run to left field.

The Eagles tacked on a single run in the fifth and added three more in the sixth.

Brian Letko (11-1) tossed a complete game five-hitter and had retired nine batters in a row before King's home run. He struck out four and induced 11 ground outs.

Josh Doane went 3-for-5 with a run scored and Derrick Pyles added a 2-for-3 performance with a run scored and three RBI. Josh Smith singled twice while Amadis Padilla went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and two RBI. Ferreiro also singled twice in four at bats.

Five different Saints had hits including Kenny Bargfeldt (Fishers, Ind./Ball State U.) who doubled in his only plate appearance. Jackson (3-3) took the loss after tossing 3.1 innings, allowing eight hits and five runs.

The second game was a marathon event, going 13 innings and included a 30-minute delay to review an NAIA substitution rule.

The rule in question had to do with Embry-Riddle's second pitcher, Josh Smith, who started the game as the team's designated hitter. He came on to pitch in the seventh inning thus eliminating the designated hitter spot in the line-up. He tossed two-thirds of an inning and was replaced by Steven Otterness. Otterness now was batting fourth in the Embry-Riddle line-up and Smith is now out of the game. But in the 10th inning, with Otterness still in the game as a pitcher, Smith came up to bat, to lead off the inning. He resumed his usual spot in the line-up, which by the NAIA rulebook is an illegal substitution. Smith struck out swinging and the rest of the inning went on, but Otterness re-took his spot on the mound. That prompted the Flagler coaching staff to have the umpires review the rulebook and a after a 30-minute delay, the right substitution was made with Otterness batting fourth and Smith out of the contest.

Prior to all that happening, the Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth after Brady hit a two-run home run over the left field wall.

The Saints answered back in the home half of the sixth inning after Shane Darnofall (Corry, Pa./Hillsborough CC) singled in a run and then Glenn Kiture (Orlando, Fla./Edgewater HS) hit an infield single with runners at the corners to tie the game.

In the 13th inning, Victor Roldan led off with a base hit up the middle. Padilla ripped a double to left-center scoring Roldan with the eventual game winning run. Padilla took third on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a squeeze bunt to give the Eagles a two-run cushion.

Roldan retired the Saints in order in the bottom of the 13th inning.

Padilla went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a runs scored and an RBI. Doane, Pyles and Roldan all collected two hits for Embry-Riddle.

Steven Otterness (7-1) tossed 4.2 innings in relief to pick up the win. He scattered two hits and fanned five while also walking five. Roldan earned his first save of the season.

Preston Picard (Detroit, Mich./Madonna U.) went 4-for-6 with a double and a run scored for Flagler. Paul Mathews (Baton Rouge, La./Saint Louis CC-Meramec) (8-1) suffered his first loss since March 12, 2005 against Palm Beach Atlantic. He tossed three innings, allowed two hits and two runs. Wes Burgess (St. Augustine, Fla./Bartram Trail HS) hurled 10 innings, allowed nine hits and just two runs and tossed 138 pitches in a tough no decision.

Flagler College travels to Miami Gardens for a three-game Florida Sun Conference series at St. Thomas University. The first game will be Apr. 14 at 7 p.m. Embry-Riddle visits Rollins College on Apr. 11 at 7 p.m. in Winter Park.
