OPA LOCKA, Fla. - Flagler College swept a Florida Sun Conference doubleheader against Florida Memorial University Saturday afternoon at Harry T. Moore Field. Flagler won the opener 6-0 and in game two, Wes Burgess (St. Augustine, Fla./Bartram Trail HS) carried a perfect game into the final inning, but a leadoff double would wipe the opportunity away, but the Saints came away with a 10-0 victory.

In the opener, Kenny Bargfeldt (Fishers, Ind./Ball State U.) and Shane Darnofall (Corry, Pa./Hillsborough CC) led off the second inning with back-to-back singles and then Bryan Harrell (Granger, Ind./Lincoln Trail College) dropped down a bunt to mo ve the runners along, but everyone was safe. Kris King (Youngstown, Ohio/Santa Fe CC) grounded into a double play but Bargfeldt scored on the play. Reno DiCarlantonio (Wellington, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS), who came into run for Darnofall, scored from third on a wild pitch to give the Saints an early 2-0 lead.

In the third, Darnofall hit a bases clearing double to give Flagler a commanding 5-0 lead. The Saints added another run in the seventh.

Austin Donmoyer (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area HS) (2-1) tossed six complete innings and scattered five hits.

Randy Miller (Jacksonville, Fla./Florida CC-Jacksonville) went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Darnofall went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.

Marlon Richardson took the loss for the Florida Memorial. He went the distance allowing seven hits and three earned runs.

In the nightcap, Burgess set down the first 18 batters he faced, 11 by fly out and four by ground out, and was on pace to throw Flagler's first perfect game. The last no-hitter was thrown several years ago. On a 0-1 pitch, Florida Memorial's Kyle LaMatta roped a double to deep left field to spoil the attempt. LaMatta was quickly erased when Leroy Thomas lined out to center field and LaMatta was caught off second base.

Burgess (3-2) faced the minimum, 21 batters, allowing just one hit and fanned three to earn the win. He threw only 65 pitches and got into just one three-ball count.

The Saints (13-9, 5-3 Florida Sun) got on the board first, scoring a single run in the second after a Mike Scott (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) ground out plated Darnofall.

Flagler scored three more runs in the third, all unearned, thanks to two Florida Memorial errors and a balk.

The Saints added one in the sixth and five more in the seventh.

Bryan Crouch (Jacksonville, Fla./Arlington Country Day School) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Jorge Marquez (Caracas, Venezuela/North Iowa Area CC) collected a pair of singles and drove in a pair of runs. Scott also had two hits and drove in a run.

Jonathan Hernandez hurled two innings and allowed two hits and one earned run. Kenneth Jefferson pitched the last four innings in relief and yielded eight hits and four earned runs.
