ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Jason Caldwell's broken bat RBI-double to straight away center in the third inning proved to be the game winning as Warner Southern College held off Flagler College 3-2 in a Florida Sun Conference baseball game Friday night at Flagler Stadium.
The Saints threatened in the third, sixth, eighth and ninth innings, but couldn't push across the tying run in each instance.
In the third,
Kenny Bargfeldt (Fishers, Ind./Ball State U.) hit a hard grounder off the Warner Southern pitcher and just beat the throw to first with two outs.
Randy Miller (Jacksonville, Fla./Florida CC-Jacksonville) followed with a bunt single but both runners were stranded.
In the sixth, Miller doubled to left-center but was thrown out trying to advance to third.
In the eighth, Miller took first after being hit by a pitch with two outs and
Kris King (Youngstown, Ohio/Santa Fe CC) followed with a single through the left side knocking Royal starter Josh Smith out of the game. Ben Shockey came in struck out Flagler pinch hitter
Bryan Crouch (Jacksonville, Fla./Arlington Country Day).
In the ninth, pinch hitter
Shane Darnofall (Corry, Pa./Hillsborough CC) led off the inning by grounding out to shortstop but the throw was dropped by the first baseman.
Reno DiCarlantonio (Wellington, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS) came in as a courtesy runner and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher by
Zach Rossetti (Tequesta, Fla./Jupiter HS). Shockey settled in and got the next two batters out, one by strikeout and the other a fly out to center to end the game.
The Royals plated two in the first, one run scoring on a double play and the other on a single by Caldwell.
Josh Smith (3-0) went 7.2 for Warner Southern (9-7, 4-0 Florida Sun), scattering nine hits and fanning five.
Christian Martinez and Ron Matheny, the Royals' 1-2 hitters, combined to go 4-for-7 and scored all three runs. Caldwell had two RBI to go along with his single and double. Victor Joaquin also added a single and a double.
Tim DeSutter (Loxahatchee, Fla./Brevard CC) (1-4) took the hard luck loss on the hill for Flagler (9-8, 2-2). He went the distance allowing 10 hits and three runs and also registered 10 strikeouts.
Miller went 3-for-3 with two singles, a double and a hit by pitch. He drove in a run with his base hit in the first inning. Bargfeldt collected a pair of singles and scored a run while King racked up a pair of singles and drove in a run in the first inning.
The same two teams will meet tomorrow (Feb. 25) for a noon doubleheader. The game time was moved up an hour due to the forecast of rain in the area.
