ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Methodist College, an NCAA Division III school from Fayetteville, N.C., used a six-run ninth to win game one 12-6 and then a three-run sixth inning to win the nightcap 6-4 in sweeping a non-conference baseball doubleheader from Flagler College Sunday afternoon at Flagler Stadium.
In the opener, Matt Mergo led off the ninth by doubling to the right-center field gap off Flagler reliever Brad Jackson (Havanna, Fla./North Florida CC). Jason Hughes followed by reaching on an error by the Saints' shortstop. Michael Ellsworth came up as a pinch hitter and reached first after he laid down a sacrifice bunt back to Jackson who threw the ball to first base in the dirt. John Whitaker then ripped a single to left field, scoring both Megro and Hughes to put the Monarchs ahead 8-6. Whitaker was thrown out trying to advance to second. Mike Eaton, who ran for Ellsworth at first, advanced to third. Brad Davis kept the inning going by drawing a bases on balls and then Mark Weadon reached first on a bunt single to third base which scored Eaton with the third run of the inning. The Monarchs plated three more runs in the inning.
Spivey went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and another driven in for Methodist. Whitaker collected a pair of singles and drove four runs in. Mergo went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and another one driven in. Hughes hit a solo home run in the third inning.
Casey Varnell (1-0) earned the win in relief of pre-season All-America selection Ryan Brandt. Varnell tossed 3.1 innings and surrendered only three hits and fanned two. Brandt went 5.2 innings and allowed 13 hits and six earned runs while striking out six.
Kenny Bargfeldt (Fishers, Ind./Ball State U.) went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, three runs scored and four RBI. His three-run homer to right field in the sixth gave Flagler a 6-4 lead. Preston Picard (Detroit, Mich./Madonna University) collected three singles and scored a pair of runs while Glenn Kiture (Orlando, Fla./Edgewater HS) doubled and singled three times while driving in a run. Shan Darnofall (Corry, Pa./Hillsborough CC) added a pair of base hits.
Jackson (1-1) took the loss in relief after hurling 1.1 innings and allowing four hits and one earned run.

In the second game, Methodist did its damage in the sixth inning. With one out, Steve Cornelius hit a pop up that the Flagler second baseman dropped allowing him to reach first. Eaton came into run for Cornelius and he would steal second base. Davis sacrificed Eaton to third with a bunt to the Flagler first baseman. Weadon followed by being hit by a pitch and then stole second to put two runners in scoring position with two outs. Two pitches later, Flagler starter Tim DeSutter (Loxahatchee, Fla./Brevard CC) plunked his fourth hitter of the game, Jonathan Spivey. With the bases loaded, Matt Hunt singled to left field scoring Eaton and Weadon. The Monarchs score their third run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Hunt led Methodist (2-0) with a pair of singles and three RBI. Adam Denning (1-0) pitched 6.2 innings allowing seven hits, four earned runs and fanning five. He gave way to Frankie Nobile who got the only batter he faced to pop up to shortstop, earning the save.
Seven different Flagler (5-5) batters collected hits. Bryan Crouch (Jacksonville, Fla./Arlington Country Day School) hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, his first homer of the year. Randy Miller (Jacksonville, Fla./Florida CC-Jacksonville) kept his hitting streak intact, extending it to 10 games after he doubled to left-center in the third inning. DeSutter (1-2) took the loss after tossing 5.2 innings, allowing six hits, three earned runs and striking out four.
Flagler College hosts Edward Waters College on Wednesday (Feb. 15) at 6 p.m. at Flagler Stadium. Methodist College visits Huntingdon College on Friday (Feb. 17) at 3 p.m.
