ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - A three-run third led to a 4-1 win in the opener and a five-run first led to the 8-0 win in game two as Flagler College swept Shorter College of Rome, Ga., in a non-conference baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Flagler Stadium. This was the season opener for the Flagler College baseball team.

In the first game, Randy Miller's (Jacksonville, Fla./Florida CC-Jacksonville) infield single put Flagler ahead 2-1 as Chris Guerra (Fremont, Calif./Mount Mercy College) scored from third. Miller would eventually score on an infield hit by Kris King (Youngstown, Ohio/Santa Fe CC).

That would be all the support starter Tim DeSutter (Loxahatchee, Fla./Brevard CC) would need to earn his first victory as a Saint. DeSutter tossed five complete innings, scattering four hits and fanning five while just allowing one run. Wes Burgess (St. Augustine, Fla./Bartram Trail HS) tossed two innings of near flawless relief, surrendering one hit, to earn the save.

Guerra went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Kenny Bargfeldt (Fishers, Ind./Ball State University) singled, doubled and scored a run.

Dustin Tommey and Ryan Murphy each had two hits for Shorter. Murphy blasted an RBI triple in the top of the second for the Hawks. Dustin Mayberry (0-1) went six innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs.

In the night cap, the Saints exploded early on the heels of Preston Picard's (Detroit, Mich./Madonna University) two-run opposite field (left) blast. With the bases loaded and two out, Zach Rossetti (Tequesta, Fla./Jupiter HS) hit a line drive off the second baseman's glove that went into right-center allowing two more runs to score.

In the fifth inning, Shane Darnofall (Corry, Pa./Hillsborough CC) hit an RBI single followed by Guerra's two-run double down the leftfield line for added insurance.

Flagler's (2-0) Austin Donmoyer (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area HS) pitched a masterful five innings, allowing only a double in the third to Murphy.

Murphy had both hits for Shorter (2-4). Kent Audia (0-2) took the loss on the hill for the Hawks. He went 4 2/3 innings, allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs.

Flagler College takes on the defending NCAA Division II National Champions, Florida Southern College, on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Henley Field in Lakeland.
