AUGUSTA, Ga. -
Marie Fairier and
Ornella Lomenzo's late rallies kept the No. 15 Flagler College women's tennis team undefeated in conference play as they defeated Augusta University 4-3 this morning at the Newman Tennis Center.
Flagler continues to battle it out with Columbus State University and Middle Georgia State University for hold of the conference as they advance to 2-0 and 9-7 overall. Augusta dropped their fourth conference match, moving to 1-3 and 7-7 overall. The Saints will host Lander University on Tuesday, Apr. 7 at 10:30 a.m.
Doubles slipped by the Saints as
Sofia Balsera and
Leah Waechter were the only pair to capture a win. Taking court three, 6-4, the duo defeated Giovanna Patrocinio and Camila Taborga.
Singles started off hot for No. 9
Elena Ondobo to even the score as she breezed by Maria Gento 6-0 and 6-1. Trailing,
Lea Jakick earned the Saints next win as they were down 3-2. Against Taborga, Jakic won 6-3 and 6-4. Lomenzo went on to even the score 3-3 to put the Saints in winning position. Lomenzo took set one 6-4 against Patrocinio, followed by a 6-2 exchange to finish in three sets. Fairier rallied back against Luciana Bejarano to secure the Saints win 3-6, 6-2 and 6-4.
