ST. AUGUSTINE - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association No. 5 Flagler College men's tennis team defeated No. 10 Wingate University 4-1 this afternoon at the Pollard Tennis Center.
The Saints earned their third top-10 win of the season and moved to 6-1 on the season while the Bulldogs fell to 5-3. The Saints have a quick turnover as they host No. 8 Washburn University on Saturday, Mar. 7 at 2 p.m. Flagler and Washburn played each other for third place at the ITA Indoor National Championship, with the Saints coming out on top 4-1.
Doubles play was a sweep for the Saints. Dominating on court two,
Simon Malis and
Ilian Borlee teamed up to beat Carlo Rosellini and Francesco Gatti 6-2. The final win came from
Aniss Rafiq and
Noah Paterson who defeated Jashan Joachim and Rodrigo De la Torre, 6-2. Before the stoppage,
Filip Kana and
Aly El Rafie almost earned their first court one win as they were up 5-3 against Emil Remsted and Martino Colabella.
In singles, the Saints were led by Rafiq on court one. Giving Flagler their second point, the No. 52 ranked freshman defeated Rosellini 6-3 and 6-1. To go up 3-1, El Rafie defeated Colabella 6-2 and 6-4. The clinching win came from No. 19 Borlee on court two. Borlee also won 6-2 and 6-4 against Ruben LeBron.
Sophomore
Jules Alias and No. 36
Raphael Rousson had their matches stopped. Prior to the match ending, Alias was on the path to sending his match into three sets as up 5-3 in the second set. Rousson was up 6-2 and 6-5 against De la Torre.
