ST. AUGUSTINE – Peyton Palladino and
George Gilson both hit home runs in Flagler College's five-run fourth inning in route to a 10-5 win over Middle Georgia State University in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game on a blustery and overcast Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
Flagler improved to 21-11 overall and 9-8 in the Peach Belt. Middle Georgia slipped to 12-21 overall and 5-12 in conference play. The two teams meet again tomorrow at 1 p.m. to close out the three-game set.
The Saints scored two runs in the first and third innings and took a 4-1 lead into the fourth. Palladino hit a lead-off home run down the left field line to get the inning started. Two batters later,
Holden Bradshaw singled to center to force a pitching change. Andrew Lowery came in to pitch for the Knights and
Taylor Shultz hit a sharp grounder under the second baseman's glove who was moving towards second to cover the bag. Shultz' grounder rolled into right-center and he was able to scamper to second base, and the throw to the bag got away, which let Bradshaw score. Shultz move to third on a wild pitch and
AJ Hunerberg drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Flagler executed a double-steal where Hunerberg drew the throw to second and Shultz stole home. The throw to the plate got away and Hunerberg went to third. Then Gilson stepped to the plate and hit a blast over the wall in right field to put Flagler ahead, 9-1.
The Saints added another run in the fifth and had to hold off a rally by Middle Georgia as it scored four runs in the last two innings.
Garrett Wright (4-2) allowed one run on seven hits in seven innings of work. He struck out four.
Justin Haskins and
Jackson Graden pitched the last two innings.
Gilson finished 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and the home run. He scored three runs and had three runs batted in.
Cael Reish went 3-for-4 with a double and he scored a run. Shultz went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored while
Eli Maddox hit two singles and drove in three runs. Bradshaw added two singles and scored a run.
Andrew Lowrey (5-1) surrendered six runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings pitched to get the loss.
Christian Dillard came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with a double, one RBI, and he scored two runs. Seve Fernandez went 2-for-5 with a double and one RBI.
