Saints and Sand Sharks go down to the wire again

ST. AUGUSTINE – Tariq Daughton scored a game high 16 points and was one of four Flagler College players to score in double figures in a hard-fought 83-80 loss to the University of South Carolina Beaufort Wednesday night in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game at Flagler Gymnasium.

With this loss, Flagler moves down to 15-10 overall and 9-8 in the Peach Belt. USC Beaufort snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 18-8 overall as well as 12-6 in the conference. The Sand Sharks won the first meeting between the two teams 83-82 in overtime on Jan. 7. The Saints will play again this Saturday at the University of North Georgia at 3:30 p.m. in Dahlonega.

The Sand Sharks used a 10-0 burst in the second half to erase a 65-63 Saints lead. Nolan Paladugu made a pair of three-pointers to give USCB a 69-65 lead, and later, Evan Kilminster's layup with 6:14 left capped the run and increased the lead to 73-65.

The Saints pulled to within one point on two different occasions late in the game. Both were on Daughton free throws with the last one coming with four seconds left to go. The Saints trailed 81-80. Kilminster sank a pair of free throws and Flagler missed a last second shot at the buzzer.

Rahdir Hicks added 15 points for the Saints on an efficient 6-of-8 shooting from the field, along with a team high six rebounds and four assists. Boom Reeves supplied 13 points and five rebounds. Melvin Teal chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds.

USC Beaufort was led by Paladugu's 15 points. He sank four 3-pointers. Kevaughn Price added 12 points, and Kilminster contributed 11 points and five rebounds. The Sand Sharks sank 11 treys, including nine in the first half alone.
