ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College took on Chowan University again in the second day of the Old Coast Classic at Flagler Field. The Saints fell short 2-1 in 10 innings. Flagler finished the tournament with No. 20 (NFCA Coaches Division II Top 25 poll) Saint Leo University, but lost 5-2 Saturday evening at Flagler Field.
Chowan finished the tournament even at 3-3, Saint Leo left with a 7-2-1 record, and Flagler ended their tournament 0-8. The Saints will head up to Florence, South Carolina to play in the Patriots Invitational next Saturday. Flagler will take on No. 10 Francis Marion University and No. 14 Kutztown University.
Against Chowan, the Saints were able to string together six hits. Trailing 1-0 in the seventh inning,
Emily Ricci was up with two outs and was hit by pitch to occupy first. She later stole second and scored the tying run with a single up the middle by
Hannah Smith. With Chowan up by one in the 10
th, the Saints hoped to grab another run but went in order in the end.
Ava Matthews (0-2) threw a complete game with 183 pitches thrown, struck out 12 batters, had five walks, allowed six hits, and gave up two earned runs.
Abby Rutledge (1-0) came into the game in the fifth and grabbed the win in the circle for the Hawks.
Chowan scored one run in the third with two singles and two walks, and its winning run in the 10
th came off an RBI-double.
In the game against Saint Leo, the Flagler answered back from a 1-0 defcit in the bottom of the first with a leadoff walk by Ricci and
Hannah Smith was hit by a pitch. Later, both advanced on a wild pitch.
Kiley McQuillan dropped down a sacrifice bunt to score Ricci and advanced Smith.
Raquelle Justice plated Smith to take the lead with a single to center.
Briana Neal socked a three-run home run in the sixth to give the Lions the lead. She went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs batted in, and she scored two runs.
The Saints tried to keep the game going in the seventh trailing 5-2.
Ryleigh Hall walked but was doubled off from a line drive to the pitcher and a strikeout to end the game.
Riley Rowe (0-4) took the loss in the circle with 2.2 innings pitched, two hits and three earned runs.
Tierney Hocquard (3-1) tossed a complete game, allowed two runs on three hits, and struck out five.
