ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - After capturing the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southeast Regional singles title in October, Simon Malis prepares to make the voyage to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for the inaugural ITA Division II Singles Championship. The tournament will begin on Nov. 4-8 at the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center.
The inaugural tournament will feature a pool of 32 players. To compete at the National Championship, each player qualified by finishing as an ITA Division II Regional Champion or Finalist, or by receiving an at-large selection, which were determined and voted on by the ITA Operating Committee. The official draw for the tournament will be released later this week ahead of day one.
During the ITA Southeast Regional, Malis entered as the second seed. In the final match, Malis faced top-seeded Harry Pugh of Lander University. Upsetting the No. 11 singles player in Division II, Malis earned his first Southeast Region title in a 6-3, 6-3 match.
Top selects for the tournament include No. 6 Lawson Prather of Rollins College, No. 11 Pugh, No. 17 Marc Mail of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and No. 18 Samuel Antwi of University of Texas-Tyler. No stranger to high pressured matches, Malis finished with a 13-3 record in singles last season while playing at court No. 1 and No. 2. During that stretch, Malis finished with a 7-3 record against ranked opponents. During the NCAA DII National Championship, Malis upset No. 1 Sebastian Rondon of University of West Florida 6-1 and 6-4.
