ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Eckerd College scored six runs, five of which were unearned, in fourth inning in a 12-3 season opening win over Flagler College in a non-conference baseball game Friday night at the Turley Athletic Complex.
Eckerd is 1-0 while Flagler is 0-1. The two teams will play a doubleheader starting at noon tomorrow to complete the series.
The Tritons scored a pair of runs in the first, but struck the big blow in the fourth. A hit batter, a Flagler error, and a base hit to right loaded the bases. Dawson Jones' infield single scored one run. Eckerd loaded the bases again and a fielder's choice plated another run. A sacrifice fly preceded a three-run home run by Christian Cabina and the Tritons held an 8-0 lead.
Tyler Shultz got the Saints on the board with a three-run home run in the top of the fifth.
Eckerd added a run in the fifth and three more in the seventh.
Grady Bivens (1-0) scattered five hits, allowed three runs, and struck out seven in five innings of work to get the win. Rocco Calise and Nathan Norwood finished the game as they split four scoreless innings.
Corey Hodierne finished with three singles, scored two runs, and he knocked in a pair of runs. Cabina had four RBI and Anthony Marino went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, and he scored a pair of runs.
CJ Hanson (0-1) allowed six runs, three of which were earned, on six hits.
Evan Scott,
Jacob Sheckter,
RJ Ensel, and
Dominick Patruno all saw time on the mound.
AJ Hunerberg collected three singles for the Saints.
