INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - In the quarterfinal round of the ITA Division II National Indoor Championship, the No. 2 (ITA Division II) Flagler College men's tennis team fell to No. 6 University of West Florida 4-2 Friday evening at the UIndy Tennis Center.
The Saints moved to 1-1 on the season while West Florida improved to 2-0. Tomorrow the Saints take on No. 12 University of Indianapolis at 2:30 p.m.
Starting the day off right, the Saints gained their first point after taking the first two courts in doubles.
Simon Malis and
Aniss Rafiq took down Sebastian Rondon and Diego Duran 6-4.
Baptiste Mercier and
Ilian Borlee played slightly better, defeating Denilso Martinez and Miguel Cabrera, 6-3. Although their match went unfinished,
Makary Adamek and
Filip Kana were up 5-3 on the Sebastian Sotelo and Tomas Leston before the stoppage.
In a hard fought loss, Mercier was the only Saint to come out victorious. Mercier defeated Rondon 6-4 in set one then 7-5 in set two. Kana and Borlee both had their matches decided in three sets. Despite his match going unfinished, Rafiq was playing in the third set where he was up 2-1. In his previous sets, Rafiq lost to Cabrera 6-2 then followed up with a 7-5 win in set two.
