Saints withstand late run by the Braves

ST. AUGUSTINE – Marley Smith scored a game high 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds to help Flagler College hold on to defeat the University of North Carolina at Pembroke 70-67 in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gym.

Flagler heads into the holiday break with an even 6-6 overall record. The Saints have won the last eight-of-10 games in the series with the Braves. UNC Pembroke has lost its last five-of-six games and dropped to 2-7 overall. Flagler hosts the University of North Georgia on Jan. 3 at 1:30 p.m.

The Saints took their largest lead of the game, 59-40, with 8:01 left in the fourth quarter after a Gabby Bush layup. The Braves closed the game on a 27-11 run, which included an 18-4 spurt after Bush's layup. Natalie Evington sank a three-pointer with three seconds remaining to cut Flagler's lead to three points.

Bush finished with 16 points, six rebounds, and had two blocked shots for the Saints. Natalie Herrin recorded her second consecutive double-double with 12 points and a game high 11 rebounds.

Bre'Asia Washington came off the bench to lead UNCP with 16 points. Grace Ikenegbu added 15 points and nine rebounds. Shaymiah Bailey finished with 11 points and nine rebounds. Anastasia Sinclair tallied a game high five steals.
