ST. AUGUSTINE —
Daniel Becerra scored two goals and tallied an assist while
Luke Williams scored a goal and finished with two assists as No. 3 seed Flagler College rolled to a 7-2 win over No. 6 seed University of South Carolina Aiken in a Peach Belt Conference Tournament first round match Saturday afternoon at Saints Field.
Flagler is unbeaten in its last three matches (6-0-3) and improved to 11-2-6 overall. The seven goals are the most scored in a postseason match since 1994. Flagler scored the most goals in a PBC tournament match since Nov. 4, 2014 when Young Harris College beat the University of North Georgia, 8-2, in a quarterfinal match. USCA ended its season with a 5-8-4 overall record. Up next for the Saints is the semifinal round, which is on Wednesday. Flagler will take on No. 2 seed Lander University at 7:30 p.m. at Van Taylor Stadium.
The two teams traded the first four goals. Becerra scored the first of his two goals just seven-plus minutes into the match. He scored his second in the 33
rd minute.
Just before halftime, in the 43rd minute, Flagler took the lead for good, 3-2, when
Henry Okenla scored off an assist from
Luke Williams and
Gustav Moberg.
Flagler carried its momentum into the second half adding four more goals to secure the win. The first came off a smooth assist from Becerra as he set up
Finn Weigelt in the 58th minute.
Moments later, Hornburg landed a free kick in the lower right corner of the net to give the Saints a 5-2 lead. Flagler continued to press with a goal from
River Beeman off an assist from Williams in the 67th minute, and Williams finished off the game with a goal, scoring off an assist from
Lenz Trubenbacher in the 75th securing Flagler win 7-2.
Ryan Rivas recorded five saves for Flagler while Felipe Mattos recorded four saves for USCA.
Flagler outshot USCA 18-12 and held a 9-5 advantage on corner kicks. The Saints committed 17 fouls to the Pacers 11.
