MIAMI SHORES, Fla. –
Paige Churchill scored a goal and assisted on the other one to help Flagler College defeat Barry University 2-0 in a non-conference women's soccer match Wednesday night at Buccaneer Field.
Flagler extended its unbeaten streak to four matches and improved to 7-6-3 overall. Barry dropped to 5-2-8 overall and suffered its first home defeat this season. Flagler's final home match of the season is Saturday against Georgia Southwestern State University. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. and following the match the Flagler seniors will be honored.
Off of a Barry free kick,
Hannah Hughes gathered a loose ball on Flagler's defensive side of the field. She dribbled over the midfield line and made a pass to her left where
Avery Raimondo took over. She passed the ball to her left to Churchill, who was about 10 feet outside of the box. She split two defenders and while sliding, got off a left-footed shot that went into the lower-right corner of the goal.
Hughes, in the 56
th minute, scored the insurance goal. A throw-in went to Churchill at the top of the box. She shuffled a short pass to her right to Hughes. She blasted a shot that was fumbled by the keeper and went in.
Phoebe Carpenter turned in her second clean sheet of the season and had four saves for the Saints. Marlen Hernandez also had four saves for the Buccaneers.
Tonight's game was a homecoming for Flagler senior defender
Grace Simon who began her career and spent two seasons at Barry.
The Saints out-shot the Buccaneers 11-8, but Barry had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. The Buccaneers committed eight fouls while Saints had four.
