AIKEN, S.C. –
Filip Hornburg scored two goals within 31 seconds, including the game-winner, to help lead Flagler College to a 4-1 victory over the University of South Carolina Aiken in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match Wednesday afternoon at Pacer Pit.
Flagler extended its unbeaten streak to seven matches and improved to 10-2-5 overall and 6-1-4 in the Peach Belt. The Saints tied the Paces earlier this year. USC Aiken dropped to 5-6-4 overall and 3-5-3 in conference play. Flagler plays its regular season finale on Saturday against No. 19 (United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25) University of North Georgia at 1 p.m. at Saints Field.
In the 70
th minute, the Saints had a free kick. After a short pass to the right, a service went to the left post. A header attempt was denied and cleared out by a Pacer defender.
Owen Cunha received the ball and lobbed a pass into the middle of the box in front of the goal. Hornburg headed the ball down and past the USCA keeper to give Flagler a 2-1 lead.
Moments later, Hornburg blasted a shot off of a free kick into the goal to give the Saints some insurance.
Luke Williams scored a goal in the 79
th minute. He assisted on the match's first goal, scored by
Lenz Trubenbacher, in the 30
th minute. That was Trubenbacher's first collegiate goal.
Rafa Reno scored the lone goal for USCA.
Ryan Rivas tallied eight saves for Flagler while Felipe Mattos had nine saves for USC Aiken.
The Saints out-shot the Pacers 27-15 and held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks. USCA was whistled for 10 fouls while Flagler committed nine.
