Saints Show Out At Belmont Abbey Invitational

Box Score BELMONT, N.C. - The Flagler College men's tennis showed their strength after finishing up the Belmont Abbey Invitational. Freshman Aniss Rafiq finished the weekend 3-0 while the doubles team of Ilian Borlee and Simon Malis posted a 3-0 record.

The tournament started off with the Saints facing Belmont Abbey College. Flagler went 4-5 in singles play and 2-2 in doubles. Borlee played the best singles match for the Saints, winning 6-0 and 6-1. Baptiste Mercier opened with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph.

Makary Adamek won his match 6-2, 6-4. The last singles win came from Rafiq, 6-2 and 6-3.

The doubles team of Borlee/Malis played the best for the Saints, defeating the Crusaders 6-2. Mercier/Rafiq handled their business, 6-4.

The final match of day saw the Saints split their doubles matches, but go 3-3 in singles play against Wingate University. Mercier/Rafiq were the lone winners in doubles, defeating their opponent 6-3. Despite the resistance, Malis came out on top, playing the best in singles for the Saints with a 7-5 and 6-3 win.

Rafiq came out on top after a back-and-fourth 7-6 tiebreaker set then cleaned things up with a 6-4 second set. Dropping the first set, Borlee came back swinging in the second taking the set 6-2. In the pro set, Borlee breezed by winning his match 10-2. 

Starting day two off going 2-2 in doubles and 1-3 in singles against Catawba College, Rafiq was the lone winner, taking both sets 6-4. In doubles play, Mercier/Rafiq won their match 6-3 while Malis/Borlee took theirs 6-4.

The final match of the tournament came against Augusta University, where the Saints split their doubles play and went 2-1 in singles. Borlee/Malis capped of their perfect doubles play with a 6-3 finish while Vinzenz Wutzl found his first win of the tournament, 6-3 and 6-1. Mercier continued to dominate his matches, finishing his weekend off in the win column with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
