WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – The No. 2 (Scorecard Division II ranking by clippd) Flagler College women's golf team fell to No. 10 St. Mary's University 3-1-1 in the NCAA Division II National Tournament medal match play quarterfinal round this afternoon at the Orange County National and Golf Center Panther Lake course.
Stella Jelinek posted the only win for the Saints as she defeated Estelle Beck by nine strokes, 79-70 (lower score wins). Both golfers started with a bogey on the first hole, but Jelinek took the lead with a pair of birdies on the next two holes. From there, Jelinek pulled away.
Henriette Stranda lost to Savannah Dupre by four strokes. Stranda had a two-stroke lead through nine holes, but Dupre rallied and tied the match on No. 14 with a birdie and Stranda made par. Dupre took the lead on No. 16 when she made par and Stranda had a double bogey. Dupre finished with a par and birdie while Stranda finished with a bogey and par.
Jordyn Hodgson and Libby Kilbride both shot a 75. Kilbride had a one-stroke lead going into the final hole, but Hodgson sank a birdie putt and Kilbride settled for a par.
Rebecca Reed edged
Sophie Wheeler by two strokes, 72-70. With the score tied through six, Reed birdied hole No. 7 and Wheeler had a double bogey. Reed had as much as a five-stroke lead, but Wheeler was able the chip away and get as close as two strokes at the end.
Orla O'Leary defeated
Shanya Arasu by three strokes, 82-79. The match was tied through nine, but O'Leary made par on three-of-the-first four holes on the back nine to take a three-shot lead.
Flagler concludes a banner season as it made its first national tournament appearance and was the first Peach Belt Conference women's golf team to advance to nationals.
