ST. AUGUSTINE – No. 6 (Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Division II Top 50) Flagler College lost a heart-breaker to No. 7 Wingate University 4-3 in a NCAA Division II Women's National Tournament preliminary round match Sunday afternoon at the Pollard Tennis Center.
Wingate improved to 21-2 and advances to the NCAA Division II National Tournament Round of 16, which begins May 20 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida. Flagler finishes with a 15-6 mark.
The match came down to No. 3 singles. Flagler trailed 3-1, but got three-set wins from
Leonie Floeth and
Laura Jipescu to knot the team score at 3-3.
Charlotta Buss won the first set in the match at No. 3 singles 6-1, but lost the last two sets to Suzuka Sambyakugari 6-4 and 6-4.
The Bulldogs held a 2-0 lead after winning the doubles point and No. 35-ranked Chloe Kosmrlj defeated No. 50
Dana Heimen 6-4 and 6-1. Meier, the No .3-ranked singles player in the nation, got the Saints on the board with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles.
