COLUMBUS, Ga. – No. 3 (Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Division II Top 25) University of North Georgia defeated No. 8 Flagler College 4-2 in the Peach Belt Conference Women's Tennis Tournament championship match Sunday afternoon at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.
North Georgia improved to 22-1 on the season and received the Peach Belt's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II National Tournament and will play in one of the two preliminaries May 10-11. Flagler is now 14-5 and will wait an see if it will receive an at-large berth. The field will be unveiled on May 6 at 8:30 p.m. on ncaa.com.
The Saints took an early lead winning two of the doubles matches.
Dana Heimen and
Leonie Floeth earned the team point with a 7-6(6) win over No. 41-ranked Johanna Lipper and Viktorie Wojcikova.
Eryka Kruk and
Toni Pfeiffer earned Flagler's first win when they rolled past Valentina Ascarrunz and Carolina Reis, 6-2.
The Nighthawks won the first two singles matches to take a 2-1 lead, but No. 4-ranked
Nadja Meier took down No. 8 Angelina Linnikova 6-4, 6-4. But North Georgia won both matches at Nos. 5 and 6 in straight sets to clinch the match.
Meier was named the tournament's most valuable singles player.
