ST. AUGUSTINE – No. 13 (ITA Collegiate Division II rankings) Washburn University made the trek east and knocked off No. 3 Flagler College 5-2 in a non-conference men's tennis match Wednesday afternoon at the Pollard Tennis Center.
Flagler is now 4-2 overall while Washburn improved to 4-2. Up next for the Saints is the University of Charleston on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Pollard Tennis Center.
"I give Washburn credit," said head coach Jonas Piiibor. "They out-played and out-worked us today. We will look at areas to improve on and get ready to play on Saturday."
The Ichabods won Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to earn the first team point.
The Saints took a 2-1 lead after wins by
Ilian Borlee and
Makary Adamek at Nos. 5 and 6 singles. Both won in straight sets. No. 11 Santiago Rendon evened the match with a straight-sets win at No. 3 singles. Tim Hammes edged No. 7
Jacopo Denitto at No. 1 singles 7-6(7), 4-6, and 6-4. No. 10 Sebastian Piontek defeated top-ranked
Baptiste Mercier at No. 2 singles and then Tommy Cecchetti ended the match with a win over
Philipp Lemken.
