ST. AUGUSTINE – No. 4 (ITA Collegiate Division II rankings) Flagler College swept No. 6 Columbus State University 4-0 in a non-conference men's tennis match Sunday afternoon in the third-place match of the ITA Division II National Men's Team Indoor Championship at the UIndy Tennis Center.
Flagler improved to 3-1 while its Peach Belt Conference rival, Columbus State, dropped to 4-2. The Saints finished the tournament with a 2-1 record, their best finish (third place) at the indoor championship. Up next for Flagler is Palm Beach Atlantic University on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Pollard Tennis Center.
Philipp Lemken and
Simon Malis posted the first win in doubles and the duo of
Ilian Borlee and
Baptiste Mercier won their match to earn the team point for the Saints.
Lemken cruised at No. 4 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win over No. 23 Daniel Hammond. Mercier, the nation's top-ranked single player, rolled past Justin Welz 6-2 and 6-4. Flagler only needed to win one more match and that came from No. 7
Jacopo Denitto. He outlasted Camilo Cano 4-6, 6-3, and 6-2.
