ST. AUGUSTINE – No. 4 (ITA Collegiate Division II rankings) Flagler College was defeated by No. 3 Saint Leo University 4-2 in a non-conference men's tennis match Saturday afternoon in the semifinal round of the ITA Division II National Men's Team Indoor Championship at the UIndy Tennis Center.
Flagler is now 2-0 while Saint Leo remains undefeated at 6-0. The Saints will play in the third-place match at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow against the loser of the Columbus State University-Barry University match.
The Lions claimed the doubles point after Eduardo Cohen and Vincent Thiel defeated
Max Berner and
Jacopo Denitto, 6-3. A 6-2 win by
Ilian Borlee and
Baptiste Mercier over No. 7-ranked Nicholas Bacella and Ghali Mensour forced the No. 3 doubles match to be the deciding match for the team point.
Flagler posted wins at Nos. 3 and 4 singles to take the lead in the match, 2-1.
Simon Malis triumphed over Mensour in straight sets (6-2 and 6-4) and
Philipp Lemken did the same over Bacella (6-4 and 6-4).
Saint Leo won singles matches at Nos. 1, 2, and 6 to win the match.
