ST. AUGUSTINE – No. 4 (ITA Collegiate Division II rankings) Flagler College knocked off top-ranked Valdosta State 4-3 in a non-conference men's tennis match Friday morning to open the quarterfinal round of the ITA Division II National Men's Team Indoor Championship at the UIndy Tennis Center.
Flagler improved to 2-0 while Valdosta State dropped to 4-1. It was the program's second win over a No. 1-ranked team in the NCAA Division II era, the last one coming April 19, 2022 vs. Columbus State University (4-3). The Saints advance to the semifinal round and will face No. 3 Saint Leo University at 11 a.m. tomorrow.
The match came down to No. 1 singles where No. 7
Jacopo Denitto was able to defeat Luca Mack 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
The Blazers claimed the doubles point after Jan Skerbatis and Boruch Skierkier defeated
Max Berner and Denitto at No. 3, 6-2.
The Saints won the first two points in singles thanks to straight-set wins by top-ranked
Baptiste Mercier and
Ilian Borlee. The Blazers won the next two singles points to jump ahead, 3-2. But
Makary Adamek took down Jerome Iaconi 6-4 and 7-6(5) to knot the match at 3-all.
