BLUFFTON, S.C. –
Andrea Fernandez had a natural hat trick to rally Flagler College to a 4-2 win over USC Beaufort in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Tuesday afternoon at Fin Land Field.
Flagler improved to 5-2-4 overall and 3-2-3 in the Peach Belt. USC Beaufort dropped to 7-4-3 overall and 3-3-1 in conference play. Up next for the Saints is the completion of the Florida Tech match on Thursday at 6 p.m. The match was suspended at the half with the score tied at 2-all on Sept. 12.
The Saints trailed early 2-0 until
Analena Jacob scored her first collegiate goal in 13
th minute.
Fernandez scored the first of her three goals in the 33
rd minute. She headed in a long pass from
Paige Churchill for the equalizer.
She scored on a free kick as she curled a shot around the wall from 25 yards out to give the Saints the lead in the 64
th minute. Her final goal was spectacular as she took a pass on the left sideline in front of the bench. Fernandez dribbled in on defender and got the first defender off balance and slid to the right where she eluded another defender to get her right foot on the ball that the keeper got part of her body on, but it wasn't enough to stop the shot from going into the net.
Fernandez finished with 11 shots in the match, 10 of which were on frame. Kassi Martin, who scored the first two goals for the Sand Sharks, had four shots with three on frame. Lauren Carmichael added four shots for USC Beaufort.
Henley Grunst tallied three saves for the Saints while her counterpart, Emily Worrell, had 12 saves.
Flagler out-shot USC Beaufort 26-14, but USCB held a 9-6 edge in corner kicks.
