ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College opened their home season with a sweep against Converse (25-12, 25-13, 25-23) during the Flagler Saints Classic on Friday, but later fell to No. 8 (AVCA Division II Top 25) University of Missouri-St. Louis in three sets (18-25, 17-25, 20-25).
The first match of the day for the Saints was productive with the team hitting .365, adding 5 total blocks and 5 aces.
Cassidy Bloom led the team with 8 kills,
Molly Boyd and
Meredith Dixon were right behind her with 7 each.
Flagler came out strong in the first set with only one tie at 3-3, before the Saints quickly took off with their lead. The largest lead in the set was by 12 points at 20-8. The Saints ended set one with an ace from
Cassidy Bloom.
Set two was not much different as Flagler took the first 5 points, two kills from
Audrey Simmons,
Molly Boyd and one from Bloom. A solo block from
Gracie Fleming secured the second set victory for the Saints. Converse found their fight in the third set, even holding the lead at 22-23 but could not hold on as Flagler took the next three points to end the match.
Tia Gripado led the Valkyries with 10 kills and 1 block.
In the nightcap, Delaney Humm and Hailey Flowers led UMSL with 10 kills apiece. Caitlin Bishop posted 35 assists and Trysta Foster added 6 service aces for the Tritons.
Bloom finished with a .273 hitting percentage as she collected 10 kills and 4 errors on 22 swings. Boyd added 7 more kills and 4 blocks for the Saints.
Amelia Fitzpatrick and
Lainee Mack shared the setting duties and each posted 13 assists. The Saints hit .207 as a team and put up 10 total blocks to the Tritons one block.
Flagler will face Missouri Southern at 1 p.m. and Embry-Riddle at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow to finish out the Flagler Saints Classic.
