ST. AUGUSTINE –
Andrea Fernandez scored the lone goal in the match as No. 10 (United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25) Flagler College edged Eckerd College in a non-conference women's soccer match Wednesday evening at Saints Field.
Flagler improved to 3-0-1 and are now 6-0-2 in its last eight home openers. Eckerd dropped to 3-3-0.
In the fifth minute, Fernandez split a pair of Triton defenders at the top of the box and chipped a shot over the keeper's head.
Eckerd had a chance in the closing seconds to tie the match, but Sierra Hudson's shot went wide.
Andrea Fernandez and
Paige Churchill each had five shots for Flagler. Aisling Spillane took three shots for Eckerd.
Henley Grunst recorded her second shutout of the season and made two saves. Cadence Talbert tallied four saves for the Tritons.
Flagler out-shot Eckerd 17-8 while the Tritons had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Up nest for Flagler is Columbus State University in a mutual Peach Belt Conference opener on Saturday at noon at Saints Field.
