ST. AUGUSTINE – The No. 5 (ITA Division II Collegiate Tennis Rankings) Flagler College women's tennis team was defeated by top-ranked Barry University 4-0 in a semifinal match at the NCAA Division II National Tournament Monday afternoon at the USTA National Tennis Center.
Flagler set a NCAA Division II era record for wins with 22 as its ends the season with a 22-5 overall mark. Barry improved to 27-0 and will play for a sixth consecutive national title tomorrow.
"I am unbelievably proud of the season that these ladies had," said head coach Rod Puebla. "We worked so hard on and off the court to accomplish all of this. We were able to reach all of the goals that we set at the beginning of the year, but it would not have been possible if they didn't believe in Flagler and our tennis program.
The Buccaneers won the doubles point with a pair of 6-2 wins.
Florencia Massardo Brain and
Nadja Meier finished with a 9-4 record at No. 3 doubles while
Laura Jipescu and
Addison Skye Breunich ended the season at 1-2 at No. 2 doubles.
No. 63 Clara Versier defeated
Charlotta Buss 6-0 and 6-2 at No. 6 singles. That was Buss' second loss (16-2) all season at No. 6. In a top five battle at No. 1 singles, top-ranked Deniz Khazan got by No. 4
Luisa Hrda, 6-3 and 6-0. Hrda finished the year with a 30-8 record sin singles and was 6-4 against nationally ranked opponents. No. 39 Xiyao Wang's win at No. 4 clinched the match. She defeated
Eryka Kruk 6-0, 6-2.
"Lu and Flo have been amazing leaders of our program," added Puebla. "They have helped make this program what it is today. I also want to thank the administration and all of the fans that stuck with us all season."
NOTE:
Nadja Meier broke the program's NCAA Division II era record for singles wins with 36. She finished with a 36-3 record and a .923 winning percentage, which is a D2 era record as well.
Luisa Hrda had a program-best (D2 era) .817 (76-17) winning percentage in singles.
