ORLANDO, Fla. –No. 8 (ITA Collegiate Division II rankings) Flagler College blanked No. 26 Azusa Pacific University 4-0 in a Round of 16 match of the NCAA Division II National Tournament Thursday afternoon at the USTA National Tennis Center. The match was delayed by lightning and rain, but was finished in the indoor facility.
Flagler improved to 19-6 and will face No. 5 University of Indianapolis in a national quarterfinal tomorrow at 7 p.m. Azusa Pacific's season concludes with an 18-7 record.
"We did a good job today dealing with adversity," said Flagler head coach
Jonas Piibor. "We are excited to move on and play tomorrow. I still feel we can play better and I know the guys are ready for a battle tomorrow."
The Saints secured the first team point in quick fashion as both doubles teams won 6-2.
Philipp Lemken and
Pavlos Parson improved their record to 12-3 at No. 2 doubles.
Before the match was delayed, all but one of the singles matches had completed the first set. One the match moved indoors, Flagler won the necessary three matches within minutes of each other. No. 30
Nikita Tatyanin improved to 16-8 at No. 1 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Marko Nikoliuk. Lemken raised his record to 14-2 at No. 4 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 win.
Fernando Bulnes won his fifth consecutive match and improved to 13-3 at No. 6 with a straight sets win over Brody Bohren.
