COLUMBUS, Ga. – The No. 5 (ITA Division II Collegiate Tennis Rankings) Flagler College women's tennis team defeated No. 12 University of North Georgia 4-1 in the Peach Belt Conference Women's Tennis Tournament championship match at the John W. Walden Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.
Flagler improved to 19-4 overall and receives the league's automatic berth to the NCAA regional tournament. North Georgia fell to 15-6, but is expected to receive an at-large berth to the regional round. The women's field will be unveiled tomorrow at 8:30 p.m. on ncaa.com.
The Saints lost the first doubles match, but
Nadja Meier and
Florencia Massardo Brain evened it up with a 6-2 win. The doubles team point came down to a pair of nationally ranked duos. Flagler's No. 24-ranked
Luisa Hrda and
Dana Heimen outlasted No. 18 Viktorie Wojcikova and Johanna Lippert, 7-5.
Flagler kept rolling in singles. Meier, ranked No. 6, won her 27
th consecutive match with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Lippert. Then Hrda, ranked No. 7, bested No. 50 Wojcikova 6-2, 7-5 to bring Flagler's lead to 3-0.
The Saints lost the match at No. 4, but
Charlotta Buss won her fifth match in a row and improved her record at No. 6 to 13-1 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory.
Hrda was selected as the tournament's singles MVP and Hrda and Heimen were named the doubles MVP.
