COLUMBUS, Ga. – No. 8 (ITA Collegiate Division II rankings) Flagler College edged No. 16 Lander University in a semifinal round match of the Peach Belt Conference Men's Tennis Tournament Saturday afternoon at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.
Flagler improved to 16-5 overall while Lander fell to 15-4. Flagler advances to the PBC Tournament final for the second consecutive year and will take on No. 3 Columbus State University tomorrow at 10 a.m. Lander should receive one of the five at-large berths for next week's regional.
Pavlos Parson and
Philipp Lemken posted the first doubles win for the Saints, but when No .3 doubles went to Lander, the team point was going to be decided by the two nationally ranked duos. No. 39
Nikita Tatyanin and
Jagger Ong-Patzwald lost 7-6(7) to No. 28 Markus Sorensen and Nick Beamish.
The Saints took a 2-1 lead after singles wins by
Fernando Bulnes and Lemken. The Bearcats re-took the lead after wins at No. 1 and 2 singles, but Parsons's win at No. 5 squared the match at 3-all and it was
Petr Cervinka's win over Matthew De Groot (6-1, 1-6, 6-0) at No. 3 that won the match for Flagler.
The Saints will look to avenge an earlier 5-2 loss to the Cougars.
