ST. AUGUSTINE –
Paige Churchill scored all three Flagler College goals in a 3-1 triumph over Clayton State University in a Peach Belt Conference Women's Soccer Tournament quarterfinal match Monday evening at Saints Field.
Flagler, the No. 3 seed, improved to 11-3-3 overall. Clayton State, the No. 6 seed, had its season come to a close and finished with a 6-7-3 mark. The Saints will take on No. 2 seed Columbus State University in a semifinal match on Friday at the UNG Soccer Complex. The kick-off time will be announced in the coming days.
"Today the team was extremely determined to put on a good performance, which I thought they did," said head coach
Ashley Martin. "Paige will undoubtedly grab the headlines with a magnificent hat trick, but the team took their game to another level. We have a lot of confidence going to Dahlonega, and we want nothing more than a fifth consecutive conference championship."
Churchill's first goal came in the 33
rd minute.
Lexy Nasello lobbed a pass to the top of the arc where
Andrea Fernandez headed the ball to Churchill who chipped the keeper to give Flagler a 1-0 lead.
She headed in her second goal in the 60
th minute and then converted a penalty kick attempt in the 74
th minute. Both Fernandez and Nasello had assists on Churchill's second goal.
Amiah Sprunger-Hightower put the Lakers on the scoreboard when she took advantage of a turnover deep in the Flagler end of the field and scored in a one-on-one with the Saints keeper.
Henley Grunst recorded two saves for Flagler. Trinity Chastain had two saves for Clayton State.
The Saints out-shot the Lakers 20-6 and held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
