HICKORY, N.C. – Flagler College's
Lirios Rizo scored off a penalty kick in the 64
th minute to tie the match, but Columbus State University got the game-winner one minute later to advance 2-1 in the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament first round Friday afternoon at the Moretz Complex.
Columbus State, the No. 4 seed, improved to 15-4-1 overall and will take on the winner of the Carson-Newman University-Lenoir-Rhyne University match on Sunday at 2 p.m. Flagler, the No. 5 seed, ended its season with an 11-5-3 record.
After a scoreless first half, Anna Grady converted a penalty kick in the 57
th minute to put the Lady Cougars on top.
Columbus State goalkeeper was whistled for a foul and was given a yellow card to set up Rizo's equalizer.
Abigal Akerson tucked a shot into the upper corner of the goal in the 65
th minute to give the Lady Cougars the lead.
Elke Fernandez' shot in the 81
st minute hit the crossbar, which would have tied the match.
Lexy Nasello's follow was blocked.
Hedrick collected six saves for Columbus State while
Henley Grunst had five saves for Flagler.
The Saints out-shot the Lady Cougars 22-15 and
Paige Churchill led the way with five shots. Columbus State had a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
