ST. AUGUSTINE –
Paige Churchill scored a pair of goals to help No. 11 (United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25) Flagler College shutout Georgia Southwestern State University 4-0 in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Wednesday evening at Saints Field.
Flagler improved to 8-0-3 overall and 4-0-2 in the Peach Belt. Georgia Southwestern dropped to 3-7-2 overall and 1-4-1 in league play.
In the seventh minute,
Moa Arlebo made a run down the left-hand side of the box, enough to draw the Hurricane keeper off her line. Arlebo then slid a pass to her right to Churchill who scored unabated.
Andrea Fernandez and
Maddie Poole scored a pair of unassisted goals within two minutes of each other to give Flagler a 3-0 lead going into the half.
Churchill knocked in a shot, with the help of a
Mikayla Lambert pass, in the 67
th minute to cap the scoring.
Churchill led the Saints with five shots and Poole added four more.
Henley Grunst and
Nadia Fung combined on the shutout and did not face a shot on frame. Alana Beddow recorded three saves in the first half for the Lady Hurricanes and Shelby Watkins added two more in the second half.
Flagler outshot Georgia Southwestern 16-3, but each team had two corner kicks.
Flagler goes on the road for the first time since Sept. 23 as they visit Lander University on Saturday in a 1 p.m. kickoff at Van Taylor Stadium.
