ST. AUGUSTINE –
Omar Figueroa led five players in double-figures with a season-high 27 points as Flagler College cruised to a 112-86 win over Clayton State University in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at Flagler Gymnasium.
Flagler evened its overall record at 10-10 and improved to 4-5 in the Peach Belt. Clayton State lost its ninth game in a row and dropped to 2-16 overall and 0-8 in conference play.
"I am really proud of our team tonight," said head coach
Blake Selland. "It's always great when everyone gets to play in front of our home crowd. The fans were awesome tonight."
Figueroa's three-pointer with 5:34 left to go in the first half ignited a 24-5 avalanche over the next 7:29 which saw Flagler's lead grow from one (31-30) to 55-35 in early stages of the second half. The Saints made 8-of-their-first-9 shots from the field in the first four minutes of the second half.
Figueroa made 11-of-15 from the field and sank 5-of-9 from behind the arc.
Jaylen Lemons added 20 points as he made 7-of-10 from the field and was 6-for-9 from long range.
Malik Bryant added 19 points while
Kyle Young and
Jax Bouknight provided 13 and 10 points, respectively. Bouknight tallied five assists.
Boom Reeves corralled a season-high eight rebounds and had six points, which included a thunderous dunk on a follow up of a missed shot.
The Saints shot 59.7 percent from the floor in the game, which included a season-best 46 made field goals. Flagler also made 15-of-29 from three-point range, including sinking 11-of-19 in the second half alone. The Saints shot a red-hot 65.9 percent from the field in the second half. Flagler tied its season-best with 27 assists.
Ricardo Saams, Jr. led the Lakers with 24 points and six rebounds. Dudley Blackwell came off the bench to score 20 points and grab six boards. Kobie Johnson added 17 points while Travis Harper II finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. Xavier Joyner dished out seven assists.
Up next for Flagler is Lander University, which will be played on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Greenwood, South Carolina.
NOTE: The 112 points scored tonight are the most since Flagler routed Trinity College of Florida 114-74 on Nov. 23, 2010.
