Men's Soccer Tops North Georgia, 3-1

DAHLONEGA, Ga.- The Flagler College men's soccer team earned its third Peach Belt Conference win after defeating the University of North Georgia, 3-1, Saturday afternoon.

"The mentality the boys showed today was brilliant," said interim head coach Thomas Coombes. "To not only play and compete for an hour with 10 men but find a way to go and win the game was incredible. This is a resilient and talented group, and I am extremely proud of how they performed today."

North Georgia (3-5-1, 0-4-1 PBC) got on the board first, scoring in the 22nd minute of the match. The Nighthawks' Haris Osmanbasic scored on an assist from Joe McInnes.

Flagler (4-2-2, 3-1-1) answered back less than four minutes later to even the score, 1-1. Jonas Schmitt netted his first goal of the season after he stripped the ball from a Nighthawk defender, shot just outside the left side of the box, and hit inside the right post to tie the game.

In the 77th minute, Dan McGuire took a shot on goal which was saved, and Jed Bowman swooped in to score on the rebound on the right side of the goal area to give the Saints a 2-1 lead.

With less than four minutes left on the clock, Flagler was awarded a penalty kick. Max Lambertz took the shot and sent the ball into the bottom left corner of the net to finalize the 3-1 score.

North Georgia held the advantage in shots (12-9), shots on goal (8-7) and corner kicks (9-2). Tirso Trueba had a game and made seven stops in goal while the Nighthawks made four saves.

The men's soccer team heads to Lander University for a PBC match Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 3 p.m. in Greenwood, South Carolina.
