ST. AUGUSTINE - The Flagler College men's soccer team earned its second Peach Belt Conference win after defeating the University of South Carolina Aiken, 4-2, Wednesday evening.
"I asked the team to react in a positive way after a disappointing result on the weekend and that's exactly what they did," said interim head coach
Thomas Coombes. "We looked dangerous going forward and created many strong chances in front of the goal. Having four different scorers shows the talent we have within the team on the offensive side of the ball."
USC Aiken (1-5-0, 1-3-0) got on the board first, scoring in the 15th minute of the match. The Pacers' Vittorio Cucciati was one yard out from the goal when he tapped in Fabian Avila's corner kick to earn a 1-0 lead.
Flagler (3-2-2, 2-1-1) answered back in the 27th minute to even the score, 1-1.
Dan McGuire netted his third goal of the season on a deflection in the middle of the box to tie the game.
Four minutes later,
George Winser launched a feed from the left side of the box to allow
Filip Sparavec to slide in and drive the ball into the low left corner of the net, giving Flagler a 2-1 advantage.
In the 44th minute, Winser sent a corner kick into the box where
Miles Shanley was able to connect for the finish by the right post. Shanley's first goal of the season gave Flagler a 3-1 lead going into the second half.
Jed Bowman made it a 4-1 game in the 79th minute when he stripped the ball from a USC Aiken defender, took a one-on-one with the goalkeeper and scored his first goal of the season. USC Aiken finalized the 4-2 score after Wynston Johnson tallied a goal on a penalty kick in the 85th minute.
The Saints held the advantage in shots (19-8), shots on goal (7-4) and corner kicks (13-2). USC Aiken's keepers made three total saves while
Tirso Trueba made two stops in the net for Flagler.
The men's soccer team heads to the University of North Georgia for a PBC match Saturday, Sept. 24 at 2:30 p.m. in Dahlonega, Georgia.
