YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. - The Flagler College men's soccer team traveled to Young Harris College for a Peach Belt Conference match Saturday afternoon where the teams ended the full 90 minutes in a 1-1 tie.
The Saints (2-1-1, 1-0-1) took an early lead, scoring on their second shot of the day in the 18th minute. On the left side of the field,
Marc Birkelund crossed the ball into the box allowing
Jared Fuentes to head the ball into the upper right corner of the goal to take a 1-0 lead.
Young Harris (1-1-2, 0-0-1) answered back just 10 minutes later, when Sergio Llopart picked up a loose ball in the box, scoring just inside the right post to knot the game, 1-1. The Saints took five shots, to the Mountain Lions' one in the remainder of the first half, with neither team able to score.
Flagler did not let up on the gas in the second half, taking eight shots in attempts to take the lead. The Saint's defense only allowed Young Harris to take three shots in the second half. With a combined four shots on goal and four saves from both sides in the second half, the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Saints had a 16-8 advantage in shots, an 8-3 advantage in corners and a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. Keeper
Tirso Trueba tallied two saves in the net, while Stathis Paplomatos had three stops for Young Harris.
Flagler returns home to host Florida Southern College for a night game at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 13 on Saints Field.
