Flagler splits two matches on first day of invite

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College split its first two matches of the season, winning 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-14) over Newberry College and then falling 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 21-25, 17-25) to Davenport University, on the first day of the Flagler Saints Invitational Friday at Flagler Gymnasium.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University won both of its matches today while Flagler, Davenport, and Newberry College all split two matches. UNC Pembroke lost its two matches.

In the opener, Flagler hit an efficient .365 with 39 kills and 12 errors on 74 swings to begin the Skylar Lopas era with a win. The Saints employed a balanced attack with Molly Boyd and Jordan Berglin each recording nine kills. Boyd finished with a .900 hitting percentage. Audrey Simmons and Ceclia Robert added six and five kills, respectively. Kennedy Muff added 23 assists and had five aces. Cameron Fenner paced the defense with six digs. Logan Garcia, Boyd and Simmons each had three total blocks.

Baylor Herlehy and Olivia Diggs led the Wolves with six kills apiece.

In the nightcap, Hayley Kreiger led Davenport with a match-high 17 kills to go along with eight digs and five total blocks. Lindsay Taylor tacked on 12 kills. Bethany Wilson and Lily LaFleur each added five total blocks.

Boyd led the Saints with 14 kills, a .524 hitting percentage and five total blocks. Berglin added 10 kills and eight digs. Garcia finished with a .412 hitting percentage as she collected nine kills with two errors on 17 swings. Muff tallied 34 assists, gathered seven digs and had four total blocks.

The final day of the tournament begins tomorrow at 11 a.m. as Newberry takes on Davenport. Flagler follows with UNC Pembroke at 1 p.m. Embry-Riddle takes on Newberry at 3 p.m. while UNC Pembroke and Davenport meet at 5 p.m. Flagler hosts Embry-Riddle at 7:30 p.m. to conclude the tournament.
