GREENWOOD, S.C. —The seventh-seeded Flagler College softball team fell to second-seeded Columbus State University, 6-5, in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Saturday night.
The loss ends the Saints' season at 25-27, while the Cougars improve to 29-23 and advance in the tournament.
With the score knotted at 5-2 in the seventh inning,
Madelyn Childs sent her first hit over the left-field wall to knot the score at 5-all with one out. Before that,
Alyssa Velez doubled to score
Valerie Beltre to put the Saints another run closer. In the next at-bat, Childs clobbered the homer to knot the score at 5-all.
Unfortunately, for the Saints, the Cougars answered in the bottom of the seventh as an error advanced the runners. From there, Caitlyn Canady ripped a fielder's choice ball and Laura Harris beat out the throw home to score the game-winning run.
The Saints' four-run seventh inning matched the Cougars' five runs scored through six innings as Flagler plated its lone run before then in the second frame.
Velez, Beltre and
Mercedes Salinas had two hits apiece as Velez and Beltre had a double each.
Kyleigh Taylor,
Courtney Robinson and Taylor all had a hit to wrap the nine-hit game versus pitcher Hannah Rose Corbin. For the Saints,
Madelyn Wise pitched a complete game while allowing four earned runs on 12 hits.
