MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Flagler College jumped six spots thanks to a solid final round and finished in a tie for sixth place with a 29-over par 881 (295-295-291) at The Battle at the Shores, which wrapped up Tuesday at the Normandy Shores Golf Club (par 71; 6,733 yards).
Mauro Baez led the Saints golfers with a 13
th place finish as his final round 1-under 70 moved him up 25 spots on the leaderboard. He carded a 4-over 217 (74-73-70). Baez made 12 birdies in the tournament, including five in the final round.
No. 1 (Golfstat Division II relative ranking) Barry University finished atop the 16-team field with a 7-under 845 (286-280-279). They won by a comfortable 14 strokes. No. 12 Nova Southeastern University (290-281-288) took second place. Five of the teams in the field are ranked in the Golfstat Top 25.
A.J. Ewart of Barry took home medalist honors. He started the day two strokes back and turned in a 3-under 68 to move into the top spot. Ewart led the 90-man field with a 4-under 208 (72-68-68). His teammates, Felipe Alvarez and Nicolas Quintero, finished in second and third places.
Franco Piovano joined Baez in 13
th place. He finished with a 4-over 217 (69-72-76).
Nic Whittaker shot a 1-under 70 today to move him up 25 places. He shot a 9-over 222 (76-76-70) and tied for 36
th place.
Trey Wilson (+17) and
Felix Villamil (+17) rounded out the Saints team. Villamil recorded an eagle in the final round.
Flagler will look to win its fourth Peach Belt Conference Championship next weekend. The 54-hole tournament starts April 15 at the Sea Palms Resort at St. Simons, Georgia.
